Baal

Bertolt Brecht · 1923 CE · Play · German · Modernist

A young poet is taken up by a publisher who wants him for the drawing room, drinks his way through the evening, and leaves for the roads of southern Germany with a girl, then another, then a fellow poet whose company turns violent. He sings in taverns for beer, sleeps in barns and under trees, and takes what is offered without paying for any of it. Brecht wrote it at twenty against the Expressionist stage's cult of the redemptive artist.
