Gypsy Ballads

Federico García Lorca · 1928 CE · Poem · Spanish · Modernist

Eighteen ballads in the old Spanish measure, set among the Roma of Andalusia: a boy alone in a forge watching the moon walk in, a wife taken down to the riverbank, a nun embroidering while horsemen pass, a smuggler bleeding at a gate he cannot reach. The Civil Guard rides through in patent leather, and the moon, the wind and the water are given parts. It made Lorca famous at thirty and he spent the rest of his life resenting the label.
