Doña Rosita the Spinster

Federico García Lorca · 1935 CE · Play · Spanish · Modernist

Granada in 1885: a girl raised by an uncle who lives for his greenhouse is engaged to a cousin leaving for the family estates in Tucumán, who swears he will send for her. Three acts carry the household across twenty-five years of changing fashions, visitors and gossiping neighbours, while the rosa mutabilis opens red in the morning and goes white by night. Lorca meant it for the provincial women he had watched wait.
