Yerma

Federico García Lorca · 1934 CE · Play · Spanish · Modernist

Married two years to a man who wants his land worked more than he wants children, a woman in an Andalusian village counts every pregnancy around her and refuses to be told to be patient. Her sense of her own honour keeps her from the shepherd she might have had, and her husband's sisters are installed in the house to watch her. A pilgrimage for barren wives, older than the church that hosts it, offers one more thing to try.
