Ghosts

Henrik Ibsen · 1881 CE · Play · Nordic · Victorian

A widow prepares to dedicate an orphanage to her late husband's memory, believing she has finally spent the last of his money and buried the truth about him, when her painter son comes home from Paris and the pastor who once sent her back to that marriage arrives to consecrate the building. What she suppressed for twenty years surfaces in her servant girl, in her son's health and in her own duty. Denounced on publication as an open drain, it was refused by every Scandinavian theatre and had its premiere in Chicago in 1882.
