Pillars of Society
Consul Bernick owns the yard, controls the coming railway and sets the moral tone of a small Norwegian coastal town, and all of it rests on a scandal he allowed another man to carry off to America fifteen years ago. That man comes back, with the half-sister Bernick once threw over, in the same week the yard is told to patch rather than rebuild a rotten hull and send it out. Ibsen's first modern prose problem play, and the one where the buried past forcing its way up through a few days of household business is first worked out in full.
