The Tale of Master Heo

Bak Jiwon · 1780 CE · Short Story · Korean · Enlightenment

A scholar who has read for seven years in a leaking house is told by his wife that reading does not feed anyone, so he walks to the richest man in Seoul, asks for ten thousand nyang on no security at all, and corners the market first in fruit and then in horsehair. Having demonstrated how thin an economy has to be for one man with borrowed money to strangle it, he takes the profit and buys an island for a shipload of the destitute. Bak set it inside his account of an embassy to Qing China, and it is the sharpest thing the Silhak reformers wrote about their own class.
