God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater
Heir to one of the largest fortunes in America, Eliot Rosewater abandons New York for a shabby office over a lunchroom in the Indiana town his family is named for, answering the telephone to anyone who calls and turning out with the volunteer fire brigade. A young lawyer sets about proving him insane so the money can pass to a distant branch of the family. Vonnegut's plainest statement of the question he kept returning to: what are people for, once they are of no economic use?
