The Rise of Silas Lapham
A Vermont farmer's son who has made a fortune in mineral paint builds on the water side of Beacon Street and cannot work out why Boston society still finds his family impossible. A young Brahmin courts one daughter while everyone assumes he means the other, the partner Lapham once bought out reappears asking for help, and a buyer turns up for mills Lapham knows to be worthless. Howells put his realist argument, that ordinary moral choice is dramatic enough, into practice on the subject of business conscience.
