César Birotteau
A Paris perfumer who made his money on an almond cream and his name by standing against Napoleon on the steps of Saint-Roch is given the Legion of Honour, enlarges the flat and throws a ball the whole quarter talks about for a month. To pay for it he lets a notary and the banker Nucingen draw him into building land around the Madeleine, and the bills start coming back protested. The most technically exact bankruptcy in fiction, written by a man who had been through several of his own.
