A Harlot High and Low

Honoré de Balzac · 1847 CE · Novel · French · Romantic

Lucien de Rubempré is back in Paris, handsome and solvent again, on terms he does not entirely understand with a Spanish priest who is not a priest and who intends to buy him a marriage and a title. The money comes out of Esther, a courtesan kept hidden in a room off the boulevards, and out of police files the priest keeps as carefully as his disguises. Picking Lucien up where Lost Illusions drops him, it carries the Comédie humaine down through the brothels and the informers to the cells of the Conciergerie.
