Père Goriot
In a shabby Paris boarding house an old pasta merchant strips himself bare to outfit two daughters who married into society and will not be seen with him. A law student from the provinces lodges upstairs, totalling up what a career in Paris costs and taking lessons from a fellow boarder with a criminal past. Balzac's whole city compressed into one address.
