John Gabriel Borkman

Henrik Ibsen · 1896 CE · Play · Nordic · Victorian

A bank manager ruined and jailed for speculating with his depositors' money has spent eight years pacing the gallery above his wife's drawing room, waiting for a deputation to come and call him back to the mines he still dreams of opening. Downstairs his wife is planning their son's life as the family's rehabilitation, and her twin sister arrives dying, with a prior claim on the boy and on the man upstairs. The penultimate play sets an entire household in the frozen aftermath of one man's ambition.
