This Sporting Life
A Yorkshire miner claws his way into professional rugby league, where his violence makes him a star the club's owners handle like bought livestock, and he cannot make his widowed landlady love him on any terms he understands. His story surfaces in fragments while he lies drugged in a dentist's chair, six teeth gone from a Boxing Day match. Anderson's first feature, from David Storey's 1960 novel, with Storey writing the screenplay himself, pushed kitchen-sink realism toward something rawer and closed the cycle at its darkest point.
