At an English public school ruled by fagging, cold showers and the cane, three senior boys led by Mick Travis drift from insolence into open revolt, and the telling drifts with them out of realism into fantasy without marking the border. Colour and monochrome alternate by whim, and a girl from a roadside café appears among the crusaders as if summoned. Anderson built it openly on Vigo's Zéro de conduite, which is not in this archive, and its schoolboy insurrection took the Palme d'Or in the year after the Paris barricades.
