A Clockwork Orange
Anthony Burgess · 1962 CE · Novel · English · Contemporary
Fifteen-year-old Alex narrates his nights of assault and burglary in a Russian-laced teenage argot the reader must learn on the move, and his devotion to Beethoven sits beside the violence without apology. Caught after his gang turns on him, he is offered early release in exchange for a conditioning meant to make cruelty physically unbearable. Burgess's British text carries a twenty-first chapter the first American edition dropped.
