The Napoleon of Notting Hill

G. K. Chesterton · 1904 CE · Novel · English · Victorian

In a London of 1984 where nothing whatever has changed in eighty years, the clerk drawn by lot to be king is a practical joker, and he issues the boroughs charters, heralds, halberdiers and banners as an elaborate leg-pull on a city with no sense of humour. One boy grows up taking the joke as gospel, so that when Notting Hill is ordered to sell a street for a new thoroughfare the pageantry acquires a standing army. Chesterton's first novel, written against the imperial self-confidence of the Boer War years.
