The Innocence of Father Brown

G. K. Chesterton · 1911 CE · Short Story · English · Victorian

Twelve cases handled by a short, shabby Essex priest who mislays his parcels, cannot manage his umbrella, and knows exactly what men do because he has spent his working life listening to them say so: a sapphire cross carried across London, a head in a walled garden, a set of footsteps that changes its walk along a corridor. The gentleman thief who becomes his lifelong companion is taken the first time by a trail of small, deliberate absurdities laid down in shops. Chesterton set the method squarely against the scientific detective, since Brown works by imagining his way inside the crime and wants the criminal's soul rather than his arrest.
