The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
Twelve cases from the Baker Street consulting practice, set down by the army doctor who shares the rooms: a king of Bohemia who needs a photograph recovered, a red-headed pawnbroker paid to copy an encyclopaedia, a stepdaughter dying in a locked bedroom. Each turns on some observation the client had no reason to think mattered. Collected from the Strand serials that made its author's name, it fixed detective fiction as a popular form.
