Six people are shot dead in an all-night coffee shop in 1953 Los Angeles, and three officers work it from different angles: a careerist who informs on colleagues, a bruiser who beats men who hit women, and a detective who sells tips to a scandal sheet. A call-house of women cut to resemble picture stars sits at the middle of it. Hanson compressed a sprawling James Ellroy novel into a tight machine.
