The Murders in the Rue Morgue

Edgar Allan Poe · 1841 CE · Short Story · Modern / American · Victorian

A mother and daughter are killed in a locked fourth-floor room off a Paris side street, a bag of gold left untouched, and every witness swears the second voice spoke a language he does not know. A young Frenchman named Auguste Dupin, who keeps the shutters closed by day and walks the city at night, reads the papers and offers the Prefect his help. The first detective story, and the source of most of what the form has done since.
