The Cask of Amontillado

Edgar Allan Poe · 1846 CE · Short Story · Modern / American · Victorian

Fifty years on, a narrator explains that he bore a thousand injuries from Fortunato and then an insult, and that revenge counts for nothing unless it is taken without penalty and the victim knows whose hand it is. At carnival he meets his half-drunk friend in motley, mentions a cask of doubtful Amontillado and a rival judge of wine, and leads him down into the family vaults. Poe's coldest story, told throughout by the man who planned it.
