The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym

Edgar Allan Poe · 1838 CE · Novel · Modern / American · Victorian

A Nantucket boy stows away on a whaler with a friend's help and wakes in the hold to find the ship taken by mutiny. Shipwreck, drawn lots and rescue by a sealer carry him south into an Antarctic sea that turns warm, toward an island whose black inhabitants will not go near anything white. Poe's only novel, and the strangest of the century's voyage narratives.
