The Masque of the Red Death

Edgar Allan Poe · 1842 CE · Short Story · Modern / American · Victorian

With a pestilence emptying his country, Prince Prospero shuts a thousand friends inside a walled abbey and welds the gates behind them. Deep in the fifth month he throws a masked ball through seven coloured rooms, the last hung in black and lit red, where an ebony clock stops the music on every hour. Poe's allegory of quarantine, staged as interior decoration.
