The Rocking-Horse Winner

D. H. Lawrence · 1926 CE · Short Story · English · Modernist

A house with an unlucky mother and never quite enough money whispers the fact in every room, though nobody living in it says so aloud. The small son decides that luck is the thing his father lacks, and finds that if he rides his rocking horse hard enough he arrives, sweating, at the name of a horse that will win; the gardener and then an uncle begin putting money on what he says. Written to order for an anthology of ghost stories, it is the most anthologised thing Lawrence wrote and the least like the rest of him.
