The Ship of Death

D. H. Lawrence · 1932 CE · Poem · English · Modernist

It is autumn and the apples are falling, bruising themselves an exit from themselves, and the soul is told to build a little ship and stock it with food and small cooking pans and a change of clothes. Hamlet's bare bodkin is put aside: a man cannot make his own quietus, only provision himself against the flood that is already rising over the world. Drafted in the last months at Bandol out of notebooks Lawrence kept after seeing the painted tombs at Cerveteri and Tarquinia.
