Siddhartha

Hermann Hesse · 1922 CE · Novel · German · Modernist

The son of a Brahmin leaves his father's rites for the forest ascetics, hears the Buddha teach and declines to become his follower, then goes down into a city to learn love from a courtesan and money from a merchant. Years later he comes back to a river and to the ferryman who once carried him across it. Hesse split the Buddha's own name between two characters and sent one of them the long way round; the Upanishads he had been reading since boyhood supply its vocabulary.
