The Upanishads

Anonymous · c. 700 BCE · Scripture · Hindu · Ancient

Teachings set at the far end of the Vedic corpus and mostly cast as dialogue: a boy who wins from Death the answer to what outlasts it, a father telling his son that the salt dissolved invisibly in water is what he himself is, a king questioned about the self that wakes, then dreams, then sleeps without dreaming. The arguments converge on the identity of ātman, the self, with brahman, the ground of everything, approached by stripping away whatever it is not. The point at which Indian religion becomes philosophy, and the direct source of the Bhagavad Gītā and of every later Vedāntic school.
