Songs of Life and Hope
Rubén Darío · 1905 CE · Poem · Latin American · Victorian
The opening poem admits that the swan-and-marquise poet of the earlier books is also the man now speaking; what follows turns from Versailles to Spain, to Roman and Castilian ancestry, and to the fear of what tomorrow is made of. One late piece envies the stone for feeling nothing and the tree for barely feeling, since there is no greater grief than being alive and knowing it. The mature volume, and the one that made him the poet of the whole Spanish-speaking world rather than of a movement.
