To Roosevelt

Rubén Darío · 1905 CE · Poem · Latin American · Victorian

The president of the United States is addressed to his face as a hunter and a Nimrod, primitive and modern, simple and complicated, part Washington and part Alexander-Nebuchadnezzar. Against that country of energy and dollars stands the other America, the one that still prays to Christ and speaks Spanish, that had poets in the days of Nezahualcóyotl and consulted the stars and knew Atlantis. Written after the United States backed Panama's secession from Colombia, and the founding poem of Latin American anti-imperialist verse.
