Azul

Rubén Darío · 1888 CE · Poem · Latin American · Victorian

A poet who has come down in the world is set in a rich man's garden and made to turn the handle of a music box for his supper; a satyr with no ear for verse judges a singing contest; a girl kept indoors is carried off to the palace of the sun. Prose tales alternate with sonnets and a cycle for the four seasons, all of it in a French-facing Castilian nobody in Spanish America had written before. The book that began modernismo, published at twenty-one in Valparaíso and made in open imitation of the Parnassians.
