Sonatina

Rubén Darío · 1896 CE · Poem · Latin American · Victorian

The princess is sad, and the palace inventories everything that has failed to console her: the jester's mouth has lost its laugh, the golden tray goes untouched, the peacock's colours mean nothing and neither do a thousand roses. She is shut in her marble and gold with a hawk in a jewelled cage and a swan on a lake of azure, and what she wants is the wings of a swallow or a butterfly. One of the most recited poems in Spanish, and the piece by which most readers know him.
