The Happy Prince and Other Tales
A gilded statue set on a column above the city can see everything its citizens take care not to, and persuades a swallow who ought to be flying to Egypt to stay one more night, then another, carrying the gold leaf and the jewels away a piece at a time. Four more tales follow: a nightingale who takes a student's grief at face value, a giant with a walled garden, a devoted friend who is being farmed, and a firework certain of its own significance. Wilde told them to his sons, and the cruelty in them is not aimed at children.
