Lady Windermere's Fan
On the morning of her coming-of-age ball a young wife is told that her husband has been paying large sums to a Mrs Erlynne, whom no respectable house in London will receive, and she finds the bank book that confirms it. He then insists the woman be invited to the ball, a birthday present is left in a room where it cannot be explained, and a letter is written that should not have been. Wilde's first success in the theatre, and the play in which he discovered that epigrams could carry a melodrama.
