The Misanthrope

Molière · 1666 CE · Play · French · Enlightenment

A man who has sworn never to tell a social lie is losing a lawsuit he refuses to lobby, has made an enemy of a marquis by declining to praise his sonnet, and is in love with the most accomplished coquette at court, whose salon runs on precisely the flattery he despises. The letters she has been writing to several admirers at once eventually arrive in the same room. Molière's darkest comedy in verse, and the play that made the misanthrope a permanent European type.
