The Miser
A rich old man lends at interest, starves his horses and has a cash box buried in the garden, while his son borrows at ruinous rates and his daughter has secretly promised herself to the steward. He announces that he will marry the girl his son loves, and that he will take her without a dowry. Written in prose against the convention that a five-act comedy be in verse, it turns a Plautine skinflint into a study of what money does inside a family.
