The Marriage of Figaro

Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais · 1784 CE · Play · French · Enlightenment

A count's valet spends his own wedding day outmanoeuvring the master who has decided to revive a feudal claim on the bride, with the countess, a lovesick page and a garden full of exchanged cloaks all working the same night. Beaumarchais gives the servant the wit, the energy and the speech that tells an aristocrat he took the trouble only to be born. Held off the stage by royal censorship for six years, it became the comedy the Revolution claimed as its own.
