The Barber of Seville

Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais · 1775 CE · Play · French · Enlightenment

A Spanish grandee follows a girl he glimpsed in Madrid to Seville, where an elderly doctor keeps her shut in his house and means to marry her himself inside the week. His former servant, now a barber with the run of every sickroom and kitchen in the city, sells him disguises as a drunk cavalryman and a music master and turns the guardian's own suspicion into the instrument that opens the door. Refused first as a comic opera, it gave the French stage a servant quicker than his masters and opened the trilogy Beaumarchais built around him.
