Woe from Wit

Alexander Griboyedov · 1825 CE · Play · Russian · Romantic

Chatsky comes back to Moscow after three years abroad, straight to the house he grew up in, and finds that the girl he left has given her evenings to her father's soft-spoken secretary. He cannot stop telling a drawing room of officials and colonels what he thinks of serfdom, rank and hired French tutors, and the room settles on a diagnosis that answers him more efficiently than argument would. Griboyedov's free iambic verse was kept off the stage and out of print in his lifetime and circulated in tens of thousands of manuscript copies; more of its lines passed into Russian as proverbs than any other work's.
