Masquerade
Arbenin has given up the card tables for marriage, and at a masked ball a bracelet leaves his wife's wrist and turns up in another man's hands. Petersburg society supplies him with exactly as much evidence as a man looking for it requires, and he keeps the gambler's habit of settling accounts himself. Lermontov built it on the verse comedy of Petersburg manners that Griboyedov had made the Russian stage's one modern form, and rewrote it three times for a censor who passed no version of it in his lifetime.
