Medea (Seneca)

Seneca · c. 50 CE · Play · Roman · Classical

The Colchian princess who gave up everything for Jason is being put out of Corinth on the day he marries the king's daughter, and she asks for one more day in the city. She spends it calling on Hecate over a catalogue of poisons that runs to enormous length, and preparing a wedding gift. Where Euripides kept the worst of it offstage, this version puts it in front of the audience and has her say she is only now becoming Medea.
