Thyestes
Seneca · c. 62 CE · Play · Roman · Classical
The ghost of Tantalus is driven back into his descendants' palace at Argos to poison the house a second time. Atreus, holding the throne, invites his exiled brother Thyestes home with promises of shared rule, and Thyestes, worn down by years of poverty, brings his sons back with him. A closet tragedy of enormous rhetorical violence, and the direct channel by which Greek myth reached Elizabethan revenge drama.
