Agamemnon

Seneca · c. 50 CE · Play · Roman · Classical

The ghost of Thyestes comes up to watch, and the queen of Argos, ten years alone with a grievance and a lover, hears that the fleet is coming home through a storm that has already broken it. The captive prophetess brought back with the king sees the whole future of the house while nobody listens to a word of it. Seneca puts a long shipwreck narrative at the centre and lets the family curse, rather than any character, drive the play.
