Oedipus

Seneca · c. 50 CE · Play · Roman · Classical

Thebes is dying of plague, and the king who came to the throne by answering a riddle is already half convinced that the cause is himself. Where Sophocles ran a legal investigation, Seneca sends Creon to a grove to raise Laius from the dead and gives a seer's daughter a long report on the entrails of a sacrifice that will not burn properly. The horror sits on the surface here, and this is the version the Renaissance stage learned from.
