Oedipe

Voltaire · 1718 CE · Play · French · Enlightenment

Thebes lies under plague and its new king presses seers, priests and an old shepherd for the name of the murderer whose punishment will lift it, while Philoctète, who loved the queen before her first marriage, arrives in the city and is accused ahead of anyone else. Voltaire adds the lovers' history to Sophocles and gives the priests lines that a Paris audience heard as an attack on its own church rather than on Thebes. Begun at nineteen and staged months after its author came out of the Bastille, it made his name overnight.
