Zaïre

Voltaire · 1732 CE · Play · French · Enlightenment

Raised in the seraglio at Jerusalem and loved by the sultan Orosmane, a young captive is days from marrying him when an aged French crusader released from his dungeons recognises the cross she has worn since infancy. Faith, family and a message passed in secret pull her two ways at once, and the sultan, told nothing and asked to wait, reads the secrecy as a lover's betrayal. Voltaire wrote it in three weeks after returning from England, and the jealousy plot follows the English tragedy he had been watching there.
