Deirdre of the Sorrows

J. M. Synge · 1910 CE · Play · English · Modernist

A girl reared apart in the woods by the old king of Ulster, who means to marry her when she is of age, meets the young man the prophecy named and crosses to Scotland with him and his two brothers. Seven years on, the king sends word that the four of them may come home in safety, and word goes back that they will. Synge worked at it through his last illness, retelling the Ulster saga of Deirdre and the sons of Uisliu in the speech he had learned in the west.
