The Tinker's Wedding

J. M. Synge · 1908 CE · Play · English · Modernist

A tinker woman camped on a Wicklow road wants to be married properly and haggles with the parish priest, who names a price she cannot raise in coin. Her man's mother drinks the fee away and a tin can is offered in its place. It was kept off the Abbey stage in Synge's lifetime, the handling of the priest judged more than Dublin would take.
