In the Shadow of the Glen

J. M. Synge · 1903 CE · Play · English · Modernist

A young wife in a lonely Wicklow cottage sits up over her old husband, laid out dead under a sheet, and lets a passing tramp in out of the rain. A herd who has been calling arrives to talk about the stock and the widow's prospects, and the corpse turns out to have views of its own. Synge took the plot from a story Pat Dirane told him on the Aran Islands; Dublin nationalists called the result a slander on Irish womanhood.
