The Well of the Saints

J. M. Synge · 1905 CE · Play · English · Modernist

A blind beggar and his blind wife live by a country road on the flattery of neighbours who have assured them for years that they are the handsomest pair in the district. A wandering friar comes by with water from a holy well in the north and offers to cure them both. Synge took the frame from a fifteenth-century French farce he had read in Paris and reset it among the small farmers and tinkers of his own country.
